New York City, often referred to as the "city that never sleeps," is a large group of islands that is home to approximately eight million people. There are five boroughs that make up the metropolitan area: Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, Staten Island and the Bronx. Long Island and parts of New Jersey and Connecticut are also included in the makeup of New York's metropolis.

The city's early history can be traced back to the Native Americans, the Dutch and English. Native Americans originally occupied the island and in the early 17th century, Henry Hudson sailed what is now called the Hudson River, which gave way for the English to claim the island. Years later the Dutch purchased what is now known as New York City from the natives but in the end the island went to the English.

New York City is a huge melting pot, as people from all over the world came to this city via Ellis Island to escape harsh conditions and seek religious freedom. Irishman, Jews and Italian were a few of the first immigrants to settle on this island. However, in recent years, people from the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Central America and South America have made this city their home.

New York offers a large selection of sightseeing attractions, upscale shopping, bargain shopping and some of the finest restaurants and hotels in the world. Visitors can see the Empire State Building, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Whitney Museum of Art, and the Apollo Theater. After a long day of sightseeing many enjoy dinner at a restaurant in Tribeca, SoHo, while others check out Chinatown or Little Italy for a more ethnic flavor.
