Jacksonville is a seaport city located in northeast Florida near the St. John’s River. The city has over 700,00 residents and the metropolitan area boasts a population of approximately 1 million people. The city was original name was Cowford, because it was a cattle crossing, but was renamed in 1822 after our 7th President Andrew Jackson.
In the 1500’s Spanish and French explorers and France claimed discovery for their perspective countries. Jean Ribault for France and Pedro Menendez de Aviles for Spain. The fight for control continued until the 18th century and in 1821 Florida became a United States territory.
Jacksonville offers attractions such as the Jacksonville Museum of Modern Art and the Cummers Gallery of Art. The city also hosts a jazz festival (Jacksonville Jazz Festival) each featuring many notable names in jazz. The Jacksonville Zoological Park and the city’s symphony orchestra perform frequently at the Center for the Performing Arts.
The city has its share of sporting events, including the Gator Bowl, ACC Championship and professional tennis tournaments are held each year. In 2005 Jacksonville played host to the NFL Superbowl.
